Sarjan Hassan (advertised on posters as Sergeant Hassan in English ) is a 1958 Malaya war film starring and also directed by P. Ramlee . Initially, the film was directed by Lamberto Avellana but he did not have time to complete the film. The directing duties were later taken over by P. Ramlee. It was released on 28 August 1958.

Director

The film was directed by Lamberto Avellana from the Philippines but he had internal problems with the production company and the actors before leaving the set suddenly. P. Ramlee who acted as assistant director decided to continue the film production smoothly.

Synopsis

Village Scenes
Tell the story of Hassan ( P. Ramlee ), a 10-year-old from Jasin , Melaka , who became an orphan after his father died. His mother died when he was still young. His late father’s employer, Pak Lebai ( Daeng Idris ), who felt sorry for Hassan’s fate, adopted Hassan as his son. However, Hassan’s adoptive father’s son, Aziz ( Jins Shamsudin ), was jealous of Hassan and hated him. When they grew up, Aziz, Buang ( Salleh Kamil ) and other friends constantly bullied and harassed Hassan. Salmah ( Saadiah ) also fell in love with Hassan. Salmah’s actions angered Aziz. When World War II was approaching, the Malay Army Regiment began recruiting recruits in Port Dickson , Negeri Sembilan . Aziz joined it but Hassan, who also wanted to join it, was prevented from doing so by his adoptive father who told him to take care of the rice fields and farms. The villagers began calling Hassan a coward and this caused Hassan to decide to run away from home so that he could join the Malay Army. Hassan proved he was capable of being a good soldier and was soon promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant .

The episode of Japanese soldiers colonizing Malaya
When Japanese soldiers attacked Singapore and Kota Bharu , Kelantan , Sergeant Hassan together with his platoon managed to control the land route to curb the advance of Japanese soldiers throughout Malaya . Hassan also rescued the injured Aziz and they were made prisoners of war due to a tactical error planned by Aziz without the approval of Hassan who acted as his platoon leader. The situation became chaotic, causing Hassan to also suffer injuries from being beaten by Japanese soldiers. Thus began the episode of the Japanese colonizing the entire Malaya on 15 February 1942 .

Hassan and his platoon were captured, Hassan began planning to escape as a prisoner of war but he was injured due to gunfire. His condition was getting weaker and he was alone in the forest before fainting in the middle of the forest. Fortunately, he was rescued by a company of British soldiers from Singapore. This time Hassan got new friends (played by HM Rohaizad and the cook ( S. Shamsuddin ). After recovering from his injuries, Hassan asked for help from the Singaporean platoon to save his friends who were captured the day before. But most of his platoon friends were confirmed dead including Sergeant Pon ( Zainol Bakar ) and Aziz. Hassan and his new platoon managed to destroy a Japanese military communications center in Malaya. This time Hassan had arrived in his hometown, he used Ah Leng ( Leng Husin ) as a middleman to eliminate the remaining Japanese soldiers and Kampeitai in Jasin, Melaka.

At the same time, Buang betrayed his own people by becoming a Japanese secret police or Kampeitai. He was appointed by the leader of the Kampeitai (played by Omar Rojik ). Buang used his position to arrest villagers who kept amateur radios and became a decoy for British soldiers. In addition, he also forced Salmah to marry him after his father was arrested for owning an amateur radio. With the help of Ah Leng, a letter from Salmah was received by Hassan. Hassan and his platoon managed to destroy the Kampeitai detention lorry and save Salmah’s father. On the orders of his leader, Buang arrested Salmah, Pak Lebai and Minah to be taken prisoner as the main suspect was still at large. That night, news was received that the war was over and that Japan had been confirmed to have surrendered in World War II. Without wasting time, the next day Hassan and his platoon attacked and captured the Kampeitai stronghold in Jasin. Although the situation had returned to normal, Buang managed to escape. Fortunately, Hassan managed to confront Buang before killing him.

Trivia

The real story of Sergeant Hassan is different from the synopsis of the film Sergeant Hassan. The main character of this film is inspired by the life story and struggle of Captain (Retired) Hassan bin Othman during the country’s Emergency period , and in the film some details of his life story are changed slightly such as the setting of the place and time because this film was released when the communists were still terrorizing. In the film, he is shown to be from Jasin , Melaka , but he was actually born in Negeri Sembilan . He was born on 15 February 1927 in Pantai , Seremban and served as a Malay soldier from 1950 to 1962. At a young age he was involved in the movement against communist attacks . He served for 16 years starting from the rank of private to the position of Assistant Company Leader in the Second Infantry Brigade. He died on 30 April 1991 due to a heart attack at the Seremban General Hospital (now the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital ) and was buried at the Tuan Sheikh Haji Mohd Said Cemetery, Seremban .

During the fight scene in the middle of the film, Japanese soldiers are shown throwing grenades by pulling out the pin and throwing them. This is a mistake because the proper way to use a Japanese grenade is to pull out the pin, tap the top, and throw it.
